He began his career as a comedian when he was nine years old. Charles attended the Baltimore School for the Arts as a teenager and spent several summers at the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Center in New York.
In 1988, he made his film debut in Hairspray, directed by fellow Baltimore native John Waters.
